History of Thumpane Divisional Secretariat

Thumpane Divisional Secretariat Division is located in the North West part of the Central province in between the longitudes 7’20-7’25 and latitudes 80’25-80’35. In the north it is bounded by the administrative border of Poojapitiya divisional secretariat and District border of Kurunegala, in the east by the administrative borders of Poojapitiya and Harispattuwa divisional secretariats, in the south by the administrative borders of Harispattuwa and Hatharaliyadda Divisional Secretariat Division and in the west by the administrative border of Hatharaliyadda Divisional Secretariat Division and District border of Kurunegala.Thumpane Divisional Secretariat Division is located in the North West part of the Central province in between the longitudes 7’20-7’25 and latitudes 80’25-80’35. Thumpane Divisional Secretariat is consisted with 67 GN Divisions and is belonging to the Galagedara Electorate. Earlier Galagedara electorate had only one Divisional Secretariat which was consisted with 124 GN Divisions. How ever for the sake of the people this Division was separated into two Divisional Secretariats in 1994 and they were called Thumpane and Hataraliyadda.  Present formation of Thumpane Divisional Secretariat was executed in year 2000 containing 67 GN Divisions.
There are so many popular folk stories or beliefs, historical happenings and geographical signs regarding derive of the name THUMPANE. Some believes that this name is developed with meaning of (Three Rocks) because this area is surrounded by three rocks namely KOBBEYGALA , BOLAGALA and ALAGALLA. Another story named GAJABA STORY says this name derives from the settlement of people brought from India by the king Gajaba around (Thun Panaha – Three fifties “150”).
The total area of Thumpane Divisional Secretariat is about 63.26 Km2. There are 120 villages and colonies in this division. Total population is nearly 41000 by 2018.
